Job Summary

The OB Technician supports patient care activities within the Maternity and Birthing Care Unit under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Charge Nurse. This role assists in clerical duties, direct patient care, and obstetrical procedures in alignment with family-centered maternity care philosophies. The technician provides care to neonatal, adolescent, adult, and elderly populations and is responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and supportive environment for mother-baby families.

Essential Functions

  • Performs clerical duties including transcribing orders, entering patient charges, scheduling appointments, and managing medical records
  • Answers call lights and telephones courteously and promptly
  • Assists in patient admissions, postpartum care, and surgical preparation and recovery under RN supervision
  • Obtains and labels specimens properly and delivers to the lab
  • Monitors and records vital signs, intake/output, and other observations
  • Prepares and cleans delivery rooms; assists physicians with exams and deliveries
  • Maintains clean and organized patient units and supply areas
  • Participates in CPR/NRP and emergency response when needed
  • Maintains departmental competencies and attends relevant training
  • Demonstrates commitment to the organization’s mission, vision, and values

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of obstetrical procedures and patient care techniques
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures accurately
  • Proficient in basic computer use and electronic medical records
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively with patients, families, and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to apply infection control and safety practices
  • Physically able to lift, carry, and support patients and supplies as outlined in physical requirements
  • Must be able to work in an environment with exposure to bodily fluids and varying temperatures

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of one semester of a nursing program preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • BLS Certification – Required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification – Required within six months of hire
  • Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA), CNA/STNA preferred
  • Phlebotomy training preferred

Experience

  • Prior experience as a Nursing Assistant or Unit Clerk preferred
  • Proficiency with computer systems and strong oral/written communication skills
