Job Summary

  • The Medical Technologist-ASCP is responsible for performing routine and complex laboratory tests in areas such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and blood banking
  • This role involves conducting diagnostic testing, analyzing test results, and maintaining laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test outcomes
  • The Medical Technologist collaborates with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and effective patient care in an acute care hospital setting

Essential Functions

  • Perform laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, and immunohematology
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment according to standard operating procedures
  • Analyze test results for accuracy, identify anomalies, and take corrective action as needed
  • Document all test results and report critical values promptly to the appropriate personnel
  • Maintain quality control and quality assurance protocols to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection as required
  • Assist in the training and orientation of new laboratory staff and students
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to infection control and safety protocols
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff, patients, and other departments regarding laboratory procedures and test results
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and continuing education to maintain clinical competencies

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in testing and documentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related science discipline required

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) required

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting preferred
