Job Summary

Provides comprehensive care for patients undergoing sleep studies and sleep disorder treatment. Responsible for the preparation, execution, monitoring, and interpretation of polysomnographic procedures and associated technologies. Educates patients and families on sleep-related concerns, coordinates care with interdisciplinary teams and ensures high-quality standards of practice within an acute care setting.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare equipment and environment for sleep testing procedures
  • Interview patients to gather information regarding sleep habits and explain procedures
  • Conduct sleep studies and perform additional tests as needed
  • Score, interpret, and report findings of sleep studies
  • Educate patients on sleep disorders, test results, and follow-up care options
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, requesting repairs or replacements as necessary
  • Ensure availability and organization of supplies and materials needed for testing

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Demonstrates critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent judgment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in high-stress situations
  • Knowledge of sleep study equipment, diagnostic testing, and treatment modalities
  • Effective communication and patient education skills
  • Maintains confidentiality and patient rights in compliance with HIPAA
  • Frequently: bending/stooping, data entry, reaching, hand/arm movements, sitting, squatting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs, pushing/pulling 0-25 lbs
  • Occasionally: kneeling, lifting/moving patients, pushing/pulling 26-75 lbs, lifting/carrying 26-75 lbs
  • Rarely: climbing, running, pushing/pulling over 75 lbs, lifting/carrying over 75 lbs
  • Visual and auditory acuity frequently required; occasional exposure to smell and taste discrimination
  • Frequent exposure to biohazardous waste, blood/bodily fluids, communicable diseases
  • Occasional exposure to dust, gases, fumes, hazardous chemicals and medications
  • Rare exposure to asbestos, cytotoxic substances, and latex
  • Work may involve evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays depending on patient needs

Qualifications

Education

  • Successful completion of a polysomnographic program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with a polysomnography option, or enrollment/completion of the A-STEP Online Self Study Modules.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Certification or registry by one of the following:
    • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) by BRPT
    • Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) by ABSM
    • Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) by NBRC
  • Equivalent examination accepted by the AASM If not registered, must be accepted to sit for the registry exam and pass within time frame required by facility policy

Experience

  • Experience in performing and scoring sleep studies in a clinical setting preferred
  • Familiarity with sleep-related equipment setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and patient education is beneficial
