Job Summary

The Nursing Assistant (Non-Certified) – Emergency Department supports emergency room staff in delivering timely and compassionate care. Responsibilities include assisting with patient hygiene and mobility, vital signs, EKGs, and maintaining an orderly, safe, and clean environment. The position helps enhance department efficiency by responding to emergent needs and supporting rapid clinical workflows under RN supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Assists patients with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, toileting, and repositioning.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, height, weight, intake/output, and reports abnormal findings.
  • Supports admission, transfer, and discharge processes including documentation and belongings management.
  • Prepares stretchers, monitors rooms, and restocks supplies to maintain readiness for emergencies.
  • Responds to call lights and provides prompt support to patients and nursing staff.
  • Assists in transport of patients to imaging, inpatient units, or procedures as needed.
  • Provides basic clinical support including application of heat/cold therapy or patient restraints under RN direction.
  • Performs or assists with routine procedures such as EKGs and specimen collection.
  • Supports emergency preparedness and contributes to effective code response procedures.
  • Maintains a clean, safe patient environment and ensures proper documentation and communication of care.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong communication and observation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and electronic documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Compassionate approach to care in high-stress situations

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Completion of a nursing assistant training program (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required)
  • De-escalation training (Required within 30 days of hire)

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months of experience in acute care, long-term care, or emergency setting (Preferred)
