Description

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) supports the clinic by providing a variety of services including direct patient care for general and preventative eye care and complications related to injury or disease of the eye.  This includes determining optimal testing techniques required to gather the desired data and to determine how best to obtain the desired information with regard to each patient’s examination. This individual is responsible for preparing and maintaining patient records, preparing patients for physician or other provider, interacting maintainingoptimal patient flow and assisting with patient care as needed.  
Job Duties: 
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.  
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Performs the following tests and procedures: Visual Acuity, Motility Testing, Assessment of Pupils and Anterior Chamber Depth, Tonometry, Lensometry, Refraction, Slit Lamp, Exam, Visual Field Testing, A-scan, IOL Master, and OCT. 
  • Ability to perform fitting and assessment of all types of contact lenses according to department standards and to instruct patients.
  • Communicates with clinic associates and providers regarding status of patients and assists with patient care on a daily basis.
  • Administers topical medication while clearly instructing patient, using correct sterile technique with proper medication; records as appropriate
  • Triage patients and/or calls for emergency/urgent situations; obtains pertinent information, and proceeds with appropriate action and documents in the patient’s chart.
  • Performs patient education under the direction of providers.
  • Prepares patient charts for office visits, obtaining reports and information necessary for complete care of the patient. Performs a variety of medical record activities in order to maintain an orderly and complete record.
  • Escorts patients into examination rooms in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Under supervision of a provider, assists with patient activities such as transporting patients, providing supplies, opening sterile items, administering medications, performing vision checks and assisting providers in room during procedures. 
  • Takes and accurately records vital signs of patients as directed by clinic nurse or physician.
  • Inventories and orders supplies to maintainappropriate stock levels. Receives, inspects and stocks supplies on a timely basis. 
  • Access and record distance, near and pinhole visual acuity using appropriate charts.
  • Runs clinical ophthalmic equipment in accordance with clinic and vendor policies and procedures.
  • Completes medication refills requests under the physician/provider’s direction.
  • Assist in training staff in various areas of ophthalmology.
  • Under supervision of licensed nurse or physician provides patients with test result information.
  • Transports a variety of materials.
  • Maintains assigned clinic areas in a clean, orderly and attractive condition. 
  • Records patient history in the manner and format required by the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.
  • Enters orders and charges into the clinic information system.
  • Completion of prior authorizations in accordance with insurer/third party payor requirements.
  • Other duties as requested

Qualifications

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent – Required
  • Associates degree in medical field – Preferred

LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant – Required
