Job Summary

The Special Procedures Technologist assists physicians in the performance of advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures in specialized imaging environments such as Interventional Radiology (IR), Cardiac Catheterization Lab, or Vascular Lab. This role is responsible for operating imaging equipment, maintaining a sterile field, preparing patients, and supporting safe and accurate procedural outcomes.

The technologist ensures compliance with radiation safety standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies while delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced procedural setting.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares equipment, supplies, and sterile field for diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Assists physicians with procedures, including guidewire, catheter, balloon, and stent placement.
  • Operates fluoroscopic and digital imaging systems to obtain high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Monitors patient condition during procedures and communicates changes to the physician or RN.
  • Administers contrast media and observes for adverse reactions in accordance with established protocols.
  • Adheres to radiation safety standards, including appropriate shielding and positioning techniques.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and ensures proper image archiving in PACS/RIS systems.
  • Follows infection control and sterile technique protocols at all times.
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and technologists to ensure efficient procedural workflow.
  • Performs room turnover, equipment cleaning, and supply restocking following procedures.
  • Participates in on-call rotation, weekends, and after-hours coverage as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of vascular anatomy, imaging techniques, and interventional procedures.
  • Proficiency in radiation safety principles and monitoring practices.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Technical proficiency with fluoroscopy, contrast delivery systems, and sterile field management.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, high-acuity clinical setting.
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy, and patient-centered care.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and imaging systems.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, or related program. (Required)
  • Associate’s Degree in Applied Science or equivalent. (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) OR Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or ARDMS credential. (Required upon hire)
  • Cardiac Interventional (CI) or Vascular Interventional (VI) certification. (Preferred upon hire)
  • Licensed Radiologic Technologist in the state of practice, if required. (Required upon hire)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS). (Required upon hire or within facility-specified timeframe)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). (Preferred upon hire or within facility-specified timeframe)

Experience

  • One (1) or more years of experience in a radiology, cardiology, or interventional procedural setting. (Preferred)
  • Prior experience with fluoroscopy, angiography, or cardiac catheterization lab equipment. (Preferred)
