Phlebotomist PRN

Phlebotomists (PBTs) perform duties in the laboratory less than the level of complexity required of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant. They are involved in the collection and processing of laboratory specimens and perform clerical duties.

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.

·Verifies test requisitions are complete including signature and diagnosis on written orders.

·Verifies patient identity utilizing two unique identifiers (i.e., name and date of birth) through patient recital.

·Obtains venous of capillary blood specimens via venipuncture, fingerstick or heel stick.

·Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following departmental procedures, and observing isolation protocols when required.

·Collects therapeutic drug monitoring specimens by collaborating with the nursing staff to ensure proper dose/collection times.

·Ensures specimen tracking by initialing, dating, and noting time of collection on all specimens.

·Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures while complying with all applicable laws and regulations.

·Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the provider, nursing station or clinic. Or by consulting with the technical staff of the laboratory. Any unresolved orders are referred to the ordering entity for clarification and the laboratory supervisor informed of the order issue.

·Updates job related knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, or participating in professional organizations.

·Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies, departmental policies, regulatory standards, and federal, state and laws.

·Enhances phlebotomy section and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and by exploring opportunities to add to job specific accomplishments.

·Assists with laboratory clerical work. Answers phones, receives specimens, and performs pre-analytical preparation/processing of specimens.
