Logan Regional

Logan Regional Medical Center is a 132-bed acute care facility in Logan, West Virginia. The hospital offers a full range of health care services in a recently expanded facility. A renovated $1.1 million Physical Rehabilitation Unit opened in 2003. A $20 million Emergency Department and Facility Renovation, completed in 2005, added approximately 42,000 square feet to the facility and renovated approximately 8,000 square feet within the existing hospital. The Emergency Department includes 22 rooms, a portable X-ray unit, a CAT scan, a portable ultrasound, X-ray rooms and three trauma rooms. The second floor includes the Women’s Center, with three labor and delivery suites, a staging area and a nine-bed nursery with the latest in safety and LDR security features. PACS Technology, which allows physicians in the Emergency Department to make consultations 24 hours a day with radiologists at other facilities across the country, has also been installed. Job Summary

  • The Medical/Surgical Charge Nurse provides leadership and clinical support during assigned shifts to ensure effective patient care delivery in a Med/Surg unit. The role includes coordination of daily operations, assignment of patient care responsibilities, support and mentorship of nursing staff, and facilitation of communication with physicians and other departments. This position ensures adherence to quality standards and promotes a safe, efficient, and patient-centered environment.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises nursing staff and oversees patient care activities during the assigned shift
  • Assigns and adjusts patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and staff competencies
  • Provides direct nursing care as necessary, including assessments, interventions, and documentation
  • Collaborates with physicians, staff, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity and quality of care
  • Acts as a resource and mentor to team members and supports performance development
  • Responds to patient emergencies and escalates concerns appropriately
  • Participates in staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and ongoing education
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels in collaboration with the House Supervisor
  • Maintains supply and equipment inventory, and ensures safe use and availability
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and promotes a culture of safety

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong clinical judgment and organizational skills
  • Effective leadership and team-building abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices for medical/surgical nursing care
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems and documentation requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond quickly to changing conditions
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, stand/walk for prolonged periods, and assist with patient mobility
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of personal protective equipment and adherence to infection control standards

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse license in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within time frame required by facility policy
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required within time frame required by facility policy

Experience

  • Minimum of two years' experience as a Registered Nurse with demonstrated clinical competence
  • One year of leadership or charge experience preferred. BSN preferred
