POSITION SUMMARY

Assume a supportive role to the professional staff to assist and facilitate the day-to-day activities of the Rehab Services Department. Under direct supervision of Physical, Occupational and Speech-Language Therapists, assist in patient treatment and performance of related tasks pertinent to maintaining an orderly department. Assumes responsibility for monitoring selected patient-management activities under the indirect supervision of the Therapist.

The Rehab Aide must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served in his/her department. The individual must acquire and/or demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He/she must be able to provide care with consideration of developmental status.

PRIMARY (ESSENTIAL) DUTIES

25%1.Under the direct supervision of the Therapist, assist in patient care.Assist the Therapist with therapeutic heat setups or other treatment setups and routine patient care tasks as assigned by the Therapist.The Aide is responsible for carrying out such assignments as directed by the Therapist and MUST NOT in any way alter the performance of such assignments without the knowledge of the Therapist.At no time will the Aide attempt a direct patient care procedure for which he/she has not been adequately trained.

25%2.Assist the Therapist in ambulating, transferring, or otherwise managing the functional mobility of patients whose mobility impairments make them difficult to handle.During the performance of such duties the Aide will utilize proper and accepted methods of body mechanics for assisted patient mobilization.

15%3.Under the indirect supervision of the Therapist assume responsibility for monitoring selected patient management activities.Such activities will consist of treatment routines of a non-critical nature such as supervision of group or individual exercise programs, etc.Observe the patient during treatment and report observations to the Therapist for inclusion into case documentation.

10%4.Assist the Therapist with transporting patient from waiting area to treatment space. The Aide may also prep the patient for therapy services with taking the patient’s vitals or starting them with exercises under the direct or indirect supervision of the Therapist.

15%5.Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of rehab facilities and equipment.Prepare treatment rooms for patient care.Remove soiled linen and replace with fresh linen.Maintain hydrocollator tanks and splint pans with adequate and clean water supply, drain, disinfect and refill periodically.Clean paraffin wax and tank and add wax as needed.

5%6.Monitor supply levels and help maintain supplies at adequate levels.Keep utility room and treatment supply containers in order and adequately stocked.

5%7.Assists the Secretary/Receptionist in the completion of those clerical tasks that can be delegated to the Rehab Aide.Handle basic reception duties, telephone coverage and patient scheduling in the absence of the Secretary/Receptionist.Use computer skills to enhance the efficiency of the Department.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

The Rehab Aide will be responsible to and receive clinical supervision from the Staff Therapists.Overall administrative supervision will be provided by the Lead Physical Therapist and the Director of Rehab Services.Response to supervision will be conducted in a professional and positive manner.Any conflict which may arise between the individual and his/her supervisor is resolved in an appropriate and professional manner.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience as a rehab aide is preferred. Applicants with one or more years of experience who have a B.S. degree in a rehab-related profession and are planning to enter Physical Therapy as a profession may be considered for this position. BLS certification required.
