Job Summary

  • The Radiation Therapist is responsible for administering radiation therapy treatments as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist. This role requires technical precision, clinical knowledge, and strong interpersonal skills to support patients undergoing cancer care. The Radiation Therapist collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff to ensure safe, accurate, and compassionate treatment delivery for patients across the lifespan.

Essential Functions

  • Administers radiation therapy treatments per physician prescriptions and protocols
  • Positions patients accurately for simulation and treatment using appropriate immobilization devices
  • Performs warm-up and safety checks on treatment and simulation equipment; reports malfunctions or irregularities
  • Obtains and evaluates simulation radiographs and portal images to verify treatment fields
  • Tattoos and photographs patient treatment areas as necessary for identification and consistency
  • Maintains audio and visual contact with patients during treatment sessions
  • Schedules daily treatments and monitors adherence to prescribed schedules
  • Educates patients and families about the treatment process and potential side effects
  • Ensures timely physician-patient interactions and reports adverse reactions to clinical staff
  • Completes weekly chart checks to confirm treatment accuracy, documentation, and regulatory compliance
  • Maintains organized treatment and simulation rooms with adequate supplies and cleanliness
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement and quality initiatives
  • Maintains professional communication with physicians, nurses, patients, and coworkers
  • Assists with transporting patients and supporting their mobility and comfort
  • Adheres to safety protocols and confidentiality standards, including infection control and patient privacy

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of anatomy, radiation safety, and treatment planning systems
  • Skilled in equipment operation, patient positioning, and recordkeeping
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with patients experiencing stress or illness
  • Ability to manage emotional responses and support patients through treatment
  • Detail-oriented and capable of maintaining accuracy under pressure
  • Frequent standing and walking; occasional lifting and transferring of patients
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for equipment use and patient positioning
  • Occasional lifting of treatment blocks and supplies
  • Radiation oncology treatment and simulation rooms
  • Potential exposure to ionizing radiation (within safety limits), emotionally distressed patients, and infectious materials
  • PPE and adherence to safety procedures required

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited radiation therapy program

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current registration as a Radiation Therapist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required
  • State license (if applicable) required
  • Continuing education as required by ARRT, Joint Commission, and state regulations

Experience

  • Experience in a radiation oncology department preferred but not required
