The Radiation Oncology Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients receiving radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. This role collaborates with radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, and multidisciplinary care teams to support safe and effective radiation treatment delivery. The Radiation Oncology Nurse assesses patient needs, manages treatment-related side effects, provides education and emotional support, and coordinates care across the treatment continuum to promote optimal clinical outcomes and patient experience.ns

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct nursing care to patients undergoing radiation therapy, including assessment, monitoring, and management of treatment-related symptoms and complications.

  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments prior to and throughout radiation treatment to identify clinical needs, changes in condition, and potential adverse reactions.

  • Educates patients and families regarding radiation therapy procedures, expected side effects, symptom management, and follow-up care.

  • Collaborates with radiation oncologists and the multidisciplinary oncology team to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.

  • Monitors patients for acute and delayed side effects related to radiation therapy and communicates findings promptly to the physician and care team.

  • Coordinates care with other departments including medical oncology, surgery, social services, and supportive care services.

  • Assists with patient triage, telephone follow-up, and symptom management for patients undergoing radiation treatment.

  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities in the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Ensures adherence to infection prevention, patient safety, and radiation safety standards.

  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and clinical education related to oncology care.

  • Supports a compassionate and patient-centered environment by addressing the psychosocial needs of patients and families during cancer treatment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of oncology nursing principles, radiation therapy processes, and cancer treatment modalities.

  • Ability to assess and manage treatment-related symptoms such as fatigue, skin reactions, pain, and nausea.

  • Strong patient education and counseling skills to support patients through complex cancer treatments.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working within multidisciplinary oncology teams.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a fast-paced outpatient or treatment center environment.

  • Knowledge of infection prevention, patient safety, and radiation safety practices.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical documentation systems.

  • Compassionate approach to patient care with strong emotional intelligence and sensitivity to the needs of oncology patients and their families.


Qualifications

Education

Postsecondary certificate, diploma, or program graduation from an accredited school of nursing. (Required)

Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

Registered Nurse (RN) – State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the state of practice. (Required upon hire)

Basic Life Support (BCLS). (Required upon hire or within facility-specified timeframe)

Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Radiation Oncology Nursing Certification. (Preferred upon hire)

Experience

Two (2) or more years of clinical nursing experience. (Required)

Prior experience in oncology, radiation oncology, infusion therapy, or a related specialty. (Preferred)

Experience providing patient education and symptom management for complex treatments. (Preferred)
