Job Summary

  • The Coordinator – Phlebotomy is responsible for performing and overseeing phlebotomy and specimen collection activities. This includes obtaining blood and other specimens, processing samples, and ensuring quality standards are met. The role also provides clerical and receptionist support, ensures proper labeling and handling of specimens, and contributes to the efficient functioning of the diagnostic laboratory and patient care areas. This position reports to the System Director of Ancillary Services.

Essential Functions

  • Receive requisitions and collect patient specimens (e.g., blood, urine) within established timeframes
  • Ensure all specimens are accurately labeled with date, time, and patient identification
  • Process specimens using proper protective equipment and safe handling techniques
  • Notify testing personnel of samples requiring immediate or specialized processing
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, faxing, answering phones, and entering orders in the computer system
  • Escort or assist patients to appropriate diagnostic service areas as needed
  • Maintain hygienic practices to prevent contamination and ensure safe laboratory conditions
  • Participate in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment
  • Recognize and respond to unsafe conditions per hospital policy
  • Demonstrate competency in serving patients across all age groups, including neonate to older adult

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, specimen handling, and infection control
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and communicate effectively
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to work in a team environment

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association required within time frame specified by facility policy

Experience

  • Clerical, receptionist, or laboratory support experience preferred
