Job Summary

The Pharmacy Intern:

  • Assists the pharmacist in the preparation, repackaging, and dispensing of medications under direct supervision
  • This role includes maintaining inventory, managing medication orders, preparing sterile and non-sterile compounds, and providing support for clinical interventions and medication reconciliation
  • Adheres to hospital policies, state regulations, and pharmacy standards

Essential Functions

  • Assists in preparing and dispensing medications under pharmacist supervision
  • Prepares and delivers unit dose cassettes, IV admixtures, and outpatient prescriptions
  • Monitors and maintains medication inventory and expiration dates
  • Performs medication reconciliation, ensuring accuracy and safety
  • Documents clinical interventions, therapy recommendations, and other activities
  • Participates in compounding of sterile and non-sterile products per USP standards
  • Conducts quality assurance checks on medication orders and dispensing processes
  • Assists with daily billing and financial record-keeping
  • Ensures adherence to infection control and safety protocols in the pharmacy area
  • Communicates effectively with staff, patients, and other healthcare providers

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong mathematical and scientific skills
  • Proficient in pharmacy software, EMR systems, and word processing applications
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Knowledge of sterile compounding, inventory management, and pharmacy regulations
  • Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and commitment to patient care
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations

Qualifications

Education

  • Actively enrolled in or graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy required

Licenses/Certifications

  • Pharmacy Intern Licensure as required by state required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required within time frame stated in facility policy

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital setting preferred
