Job Summary

  • The Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse who, under the supervision of the Department Director or Manager, is responsible for assisting with patient care coordination, daily operational oversight, and frontline leadership
  • This role supports direct patient care delivery while acting as a clinical resource, ensuring appropriate staffing, and maintaining quality standards across the unit

Essential Functions

  • Performs all standard RN clinical care duties in accordance with the unit's patient population and scope of service
  • Oversees daily operations of the assigned shift or unit, including patient assignments and workflow prioritization
  • Assists in planning and coordinating care to ensure patient safety, satisfaction, and continuity
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing staff, support personnel, physicians, and other departments
  • Assists in staffing, timekeeping, and schedule coordination as delegated by the Nurse Manager
  • Participates in staff mentoring, competency assessments, and performance feedback under direction of leadership
  • Facilitates incident or event follow-up and documentation per policy
  • Supports and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and quality standards
  • Provides guidance on problem solving and conflict resolution within the unit
  • Acts as a role model for professional practice and promotes teamwork and accountability
  • Participates in the development and implementation of departmental protocols and clinical improvements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong clinical knowledge of nursing practices, patient care procedures, and safety standards
  • Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle stress, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing conditions
  • Skilled in critical thinking, team coordination, and resource management
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and standard clinical documentation practices

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience preferred
  • Prior charge nurse or clinical leadership experience desirable
