Job Summary

  • Under the direction and oversite of licensed professional provides direct and indirect patient care. Demonstrates clinical competence in modality in which they are pending state required licensure. Provide care, using technology, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, with supervision oversite. Acts as a patient and family advocate. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system.  Communicates appropriately regarding changes in patient's status, symptomatology, and results of diagnostic studies. Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Essential Functions

  • Pending RN Licensure
  • If state requirements allow, may only sign off on paperwork using the initials Graduate nurse (GN) to signify they are a graduate nurse
  • For states prohibiting new graduate nurses to sign off; RN licensed supervising care must sign off on appliable paperwork.
  • Maintains accurate and continued documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes
  • Able to perform a head-to-toe assessment on general patient population, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and reassessments as per policy
  • Able to adequately assess and reassess pain
  • Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques
  • Educates the patient and family regarding pain management
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition
  • Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors
  • Able to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness
  • I interact professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family
  • Possesses the ability to assist physicians with procedures, as needed
  • Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers
  • Effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over patient life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patients served
  • Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Demonstrates proficient time management skills
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security. Additional languages are preferred
  • Able to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and their families

Qualifications

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Currently enrolled accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science (BSN) program
  • Associate degree ASN or BSN required within 180 days

Licenses/Certifications

  • Scheduled to complete and pass boards within 90-days of graduation from ASN or BSN program
  • If applicable, based on state location, a temporary Nurse Practice Permit is required in the state where you are practicing
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire or transfer
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 90 days of hire or transfer

Experience

  • Patient care experience preferred
