Job Summary

  • The Manager – Plant Operations / Maintenance is responsible for directing and coordinating all maintenance and engineering activities within the hospital. This includes facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, pest control, equipment upkeep, and regulatory compliance. The Manager ensures that physical plant operations support patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency in alignment with hospital policies and healthcare standards.

Essential Functions

  • Manages daily operations of plant services including building maintenance, grounds, and environmental controls
  • Develops and implements protocols, maintenance schedules, and safety procedures in accordance with regulatory standards
  • Ensures effective pest control, equipment functionality, supply availability, and a safe, clean work environment
  • Reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures to reflect facility objectives and regulatory compliance
  • Hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates maintenance staff; ensures appropriate staffing levels
  • Participates in the development of the department budget and provides financial reporting related to maintenance activities
  • Oversees contractor/vendor work and evaluates product and service value for cost-effectiveness
  • Coordinates inspections, corrective actions, and quality improvement initiatives for plant systems and infrastructure
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), OSHA, NFPA, CMS, and state health regulations
  • Collaborates with other departments on projects affecting facility operations and patient care delivery

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • In-depth understanding of building systems, preventive maintenance, and mechanical/electrical infrastructure
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and physical environment standards
  • Strong leadership, project management, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and facilities maintenance systems
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, safety codes, and regulatory guidelines
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, lifting, and manual dexterity
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs and ability to respond to physical plant emergencies
  • Visual and auditory acuity required for inspections, troubleshooting, and communications
  • Indoor and outdoor environments including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and clinical areas
  • Potential exposure to electrical hazards, chemicals, loud noise, and temperature extremes
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety procedures

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Licenses/Certifications

  • None required
  • Relevant trade, engineering, or facility management certifications preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in maintenance or plant operations required
  • At least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role in a healthcare or related facility preferred
