Job Summary

  • The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating all activities related to emergency preparedness, disaster response, and environment of care (EOC) safety programs within the hospital
  • This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards and serves as a liaison with local, regional, and state emergency services
  • The Coordinator works collaboratively across departments to facilitate training, manage critical incident exercises, and oversee hazardous materials compliance and emergency operations documentation

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
  • Plan and execute hospital-wide emergency preparedness drills including collaboration with local emergency services
  • Serve as liaison to public safety officials and external emergency preparedness entities
  • Facilitate emergency preparedness training for hospital departments
  • Monitor compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, EPA, CMS, and other regulatory standards related to safety and emergency preparedness
  • Develop and maintain emergency response documentation, including policies and procedures
  • Chair the Emergency Preparedness Committee and maintain agendas and meeting minutes
  • Maintain inventory and readiness of emergency preparedness equipment and supplies
  • Collaborate with education and department leaders to support EOC training and policy implementation
  • Report Environment of Care quality data to the hospital’s Performance Improvement Committee
  • Coordinate the hazard communication program, including Safety Data Sheets and staff education
  • Oversee management of hazardous materials and waste compliance
  • Participate in internal and external emergency preparedness task forces and committees

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of hospital safety regulations and emergency management principles
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external partners
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage projects, analyze data, and present findings
  • Frequent walking, standing, and use of emergency equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and climb ladders as needed
  • Exposure to hazardous materials with appropriate precautions
  • Use of hand and power tools in emergency preparedness tasks
  • Hospital environment with exposure to clinical and mechanical areas
  • Occasional high-stress situations during drills and actual emergency responses
  • Regular interaction with hospital leadership, clinical staff, and external agencies

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800 certification through a FEMA-accredited program required within time frame required by facility policy
  • Safety certifications preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must meet certification and licensure requirements within time frame required by facility policy
  • Valid driver’s license required

Experience

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting required
  • Experience in emergency management and environment of care coordination preferred
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations applicable to healthcare settings
