Job Summary

The Echo Tech is responsible for performing diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures, including transthoracic, stress, and transesophageal echocardiograms. This role assesses cardiac anatomy and function using Doppler and ultrasound imaging to support clinical diagnosis and treatment. The Echocardiographer works closely with cardiologists, nurses, and technologists to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

Essential Functions

  • Perform transthoracic, stress, and transesophageal echocardiograms in accordance with established protocols.
  • Acquire, evaluate, and document cardiac images and Doppler data, adjusting settings for optimal image quality.
  • Obtain patient history, assess clinical information, and communicate findings to the interpreting cardiologist.
  • Calculate hemodynamic values (e.g. ejection fraction, valve gradients, flow velocities) using standard methods (e.g. continuity equation, Bernoulli principle).
  • Accurately document procedures and enter data into the electronic health record (EHR) and cardiovascular imaging systems.
  • Assist in coordinating patient care during echo procedures, including education and comfort measures.
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain equipment and exam rooms according to infection control standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance, continuing education, and departmental policy updates.
  • Support orientation and training of new staff and students as needed.
  • Follow safety, HIPAA, and regulatory guidelines in all activities.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Proficient in echocardiographic techniques and operation of ultrasound equipment.
  • Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret echocardiographic findings in relation to patient age, condition, and medical history.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a healthcare team.

Qualifications

Education

  • Postsecondary (Cert/Diploma/Program Grad) completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound or Echocardiography program (Required)

Licenses/Certifications

  • ARDMS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography in Adult Echocardiology Upon Hire (Required) Or
  • CCI - Cardiovascular Credentialing International in Adult Echocardiology Upon Hire (Required) Or
  • RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or RCS-Registered Cardiac Sonographer Upon Hire or within facility-specified time frame (Required) And
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire or within facility-specified time frame (Required)

Experience

  • 1+ years independent clinical experience performing echocardiographic exams (Preferred) And
  • Prior Experience working with adult and geriatric populations (Preferred)
