Job Summary

  • Under the direction of a Radiologist and/or Imaging Manager, the Mammography Technologist performs mammography procedures in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. This position involves preparing equipment, educating patients, performing imaging procedures, and maintaining quality control standards. The role also includes ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines, assisting with interventional procedures, and providing superior patient care across various age groups.

Essential Functions

  • Reviews patient history and physician orders; educates patient regarding procedures to ensure understanding and cooperation
  • Positions patient and performs imaging procedures, including biopsies and stereotactic procedures
  • Monitors patient condition continually and responds to changes as appropriate
  • Implements safety protocols and performs quality control checks on imaging equipment
  • Analyzes imaging results for quality and accuracy, takes corrective action as necessary
  • Enters and transmits scan results; maintains accurate patient records and documentation
  • Assists with interventional procedures, including needle localization and fine needle aspiration
  • Ensures compliance with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and other relevant regulations
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and reports issues to the supervisor
  • Participates in safety training and follows protocols for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials

  • Demonstrates superior interpersonal and communication skills with patients and team members
  • Ability to perform critical thinking and decisive judgment in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and adapt to changing priorities
  • Proficiency in the use of imaging software and mammography tracking systems
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures and radiation safety standards
  • Physical ability to lift and move patients, and perform frequent bending, stooping, and reaching
  • Ability to handle exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals safely
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information and adheres to hospital policies and procedures
  • Participates in ongoing training and professional development
  • Maintains exam rooms and equipment in a clean and organized condition
  • Attends departmental meetings and safety briefings as required

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program, required
  • Must hold ARRT certification in Radiography and Mammography (M), required
  • Completion of 200 mammograms within a 24-month period, preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Active state Radiologic Technologist license, required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required
  • SCRQSA registration (if applicable), required

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of general radiography experience, preferred
  • Minimum of two years of experience in Mammography, preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in quality assurance and quality control in mammography, preferred
