Job Summary

  • Under the direction of senior hospital leadership, the Assistant Director/Manager of Laboratory Services is responsible for the overall management and coordination of day-to-day operations of the clinical laboratory. This includes oversight of quality control programs, personnel management, regulatory compliance, budget, vendor management, and service delivery to ensure the highest standard of patient care and operational efficiency.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees and coordinates all daily operations of the clinical laboratory across all departments
  • Ensures compliance with hospital, state, federal, and accreditation standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, TJC)
  • Manages quality control, quality assurance, performance improvement, and regulatory readiness
  • Coordinates personnel schedules, staffing levels, and performance evaluations
  • Develops and manages departmental budget, procurement, and financial reports
  • Leads training, orientation, and competency assessment for staff
  • Interfaces with IT and LIS teams for system optimization and reporting
  • Participates in long- and short-term strategic planning for laboratory services
  • Acts as liaison with physicians, nursing staff, vendors, and administration
  • Monitors laboratory equipment functionality, maintenance, and repair
  • Supports continuous quality improvement initiatives and leads special projects

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • In-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, practices, and regulations
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Proficient in laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders
  • Ability to mentor and coach staff for professional development and growth
  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA, OSHA, and safety regulations

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field required
  • MT or MLS certification by ASCP or equivalent preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • BLS certification preferred
  • CPPS certification within one year of hire if/as required per facility policy

Experience

  • Five (5) years of experience in a clinical laboratory required
  • Two (2) years of laboratory supervisory or leadership experience required
