JOB SUMMARY

The System Director of Laboratory manages the departmental operations and personnel management. The director must be knowledgeable of and ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards and maintain the departmental policies and procedures in support of these standards and other organizational initiatives. Coordinates the laboratory Quality Control, Proficiency Testing and inventory programs.

Reports to: System Director Laboratory Services FLSA Status: Exempt

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensures laboratory operates in compliance with all relevant federal, state and local regulations and all company policies and procedures.

Reviews all necessary laboratory documentation to ensure compliance with standards including policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

Maintains technical skills within all areas of the laboratory.

Performs quality control for all procedures. Posts, or verifies results on computer and takes action when indicated by the values.

Enters and retrieves data from LIS as necessary.

Maintains inventory as necessary

Assists director with schedules, interviews and hiring recommendations

Assists with orientation and training of personnel and students

Prepares periodic reports as requested

Monitors department charges and chargemaster

Performs annual review of department policies and procedures

Always operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner.

Performs tests and related duties exhibiting high quality of performance and timeliness.

Works closely with Lead Techs to ensure compliance with proficiency testing, maintaining policy/procedures, quality control and inventory.

Verifies correct patient identification using two unique identifiers prior to blood drawing and during patient testing.

Consistently recognizes and prioritizes multiple stats or critical patient tests.

Always immediately communicates critical values per policy.

Accurately completes all procedures scheduled during the shift.

Completes work left from previous shift and assists others as needed.

At shift change, communicates lab status and/or problems.

Demonstrates culturally appropriate interventions regarding age, gender, geographic population and race.

Exhibits good working knowledge and logic in troubleshooting and repair of instruments. Does routine and preventative instrument maintenance as scheduled and documents appropriately.

Knowledge (through training) or experience and demonstrated competency in delivering care across the life span of Neonate Newborn (<30 days), infants (<1 year), early childhood (1 year and <5 years), late childhood (5 years and <13 years), adolescent (13 and <17 years), young adult (17 to <30 years), middle adult (30 years to <60 years), older adult (>60 years).

Physical Demands

Lifting & Carrying: May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds

Pushing & Pulling: May be expected to push or pull 150-300 pounds with assistance on occasion

Position requires regular consistent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting of objects.

Hand Use: Manual dexterity is essential to perform designated duties. Both fine and gross motor skills are required. Working speed may be crucial.

Talking/Hearing/Visual Acuity: Will be required for performance on this job.

Will be expected to use proper body mechanics at all times

Environmental Conditions

Universal Precautions - OSHA Job Exposure Category I. This position includes tasks that routinely involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues including blood-borne pathogens and patient disease processes.

This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilations.


Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree required in Laboratory Science or related field

3 years' supervisory experience

3 years' experience at Medical Technologist

Registry required by AMT, ASCP, HEW, HHS, or NCA"

Current BLS certification through American Heart Association
