Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician II-Certified is responsible for performing advanced laboratory tests and quality control procedures in areas such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and blood banking. In addition to routine testing, this role involves analyzing test results, troubleshooting complex testing issues, and assisting with training and mentoring junior laboratory staff. The MLT II collaborates with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information and ensure regulatory compliance in an acute care hospital setting.

Essential Functions

  • Perform advanced laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood banking, and immunohematology.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment, resolving testing discrepancies, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Review and validate test results to ensure diagnostic accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Train and mentor new laboratory staff and students, providing technical guidance and support.
  • Participate in quality control programs, proficiency testing, and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies, prepare reagents, and maintain documentation for regulatory audits.
  • Perform specimen collection, processing, and storage, adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new testing procedures and protocols.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to provide accurate and timely test results for patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, following safety and infection control guidelines.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, quality control, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills for complex testing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with laboratory staff and clinicians.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under pressure.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Applied Science, Biology, or related field required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • ASCP or AMT certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within the timeframe specified by the facility

Experience

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting required
  • Experience in high complexity testing and quality control procedures preferred
