Job Summary

  • The Charge Nurse – Surgery / Operating Room is a Registered Nurse who provides direct perioperative care while serving as the clinical leader for the surgical nursing team. This role is responsible for managing the daily workflow of the operating room, ensuring appropriate staffing and resource allocation, maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and supporting high-quality surgical care across multiple specialties and patient populations.

Essential Functions

  • Provides hands-on perioperative nursing care, including circulating and/or scrubbing, depending on competency and department needs
  • Coordinates daily OR schedule and case flow; adjusts staffing assignments based on patient acuity and procedure complexity
  • Serves as the central communication link among nurses, surgical techs, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and sterile processing
  • Ensures timely turnover of OR rooms and prioritization of emergent cases
  • Maintains availability of appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies for scheduled and emergency procedures
  • Monitors adherence to infection control policies, time-out procedures, and patient safety standards
  • Supports orientation, training, and performance feedback for OR nursing staff
  • Assists with incident reporting, audit response, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Collaborates with perioperative leadership on supply utilization, budgetary oversight, and case documentation accuracy
  • Models professionalism, teamwork, and clinical excellence in a high-acuity environment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • In-depth understanding of OR workflows, equipment, instrumentation, and sterile techniques
  • Strong clinical judgment, decision-making, and communication skills
  • Effective leadership, delegation, and conflict resolution capabilities
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and surgical scheduling systems
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in urgent and emergent situations
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • Must be able to safely move patients and handle equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Full visual and auditory acuity required for patient monitoring and communication
  • Inpatient hospital operating rooms
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, sharp instruments, biohazards, and surgical gases
  • PPE required in accordance with infection prevention protocols

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required
  • Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of inpatient operating room experience required
  • Prior charge nurse or clinical leadership experience in perioperative services preferred
