Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist Supervisor supports the Manager/Director of Respiratory Therapy in coordinating and supervising staff activities and ensuring high-quality respiratory care. The role includes oversight of clinical operations, compliance with regulatory standards, performance improvement, and staff development. The Supervisor also provides direct patient care as needed and acts as a liaison between staff, physicians, and hospital leadership.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in planning and implementing new services and initiatives for the respiratory care department
  • Coordinates and supervises staff activities and daily operations during assigned shifts
  • Ensures safe and effective administration of respiratory treatments and medications
  • Supports staff competency, including training, performance evaluation, and adherence to clinical protocols
  • Ensures department compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards
  • Participates in scheduling, recordkeeping, and inventory management
  • Maintains communication with staff, administration, and other hospital departments
  • Assists with equipment maintenance, calibration, and safety checks
  • Facilitates cardiopulmonary procedures for internal and external requests
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families, involving them in care planning
  • Provides mentorship and hands-on training to staff respiratory therapists

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in clinical respiratory procedures and equipment
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, prioritization, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to remain composed and effective in high-pressure situations
  • Strong attendance and reliability
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English

Qualifications

Education

  • Postsecondary (Cert/Diploma/Program Grad) from an accredited respiratory therapy program (Required)
  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited respiratory therapy program (Required)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Respiratory Therapy license in good standing from the applicable state board
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential in compliance with NBRC Credential Maintenance Program
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required within time frame required by facility policy

Experience

  • 2+ years experience in all aspects of respiratory care services (Preferred)
  • Prior Experience leadership or supervisory role (Preferred)
