Job Summary: 

To function responsibly as a scrubbed member of the surgical team in anticipating the needs of the surgeon, passing sterile instruments, and maintaining standards of care in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center and the Department of Surgery.

Essential Functions:

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Assists with damp dusting rooms and lights before cases; assists housekeeping with cleaning after each case as necessary
  • Checks equipment for proper functioning prior to each case
  • Checks daily schedule, opens packs and sterile equipment needed maintaining sterile technique
  • Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions instruments, equipment and supplies. Ensures good working order of equipment and instruments
  • Assists surgeon with gowning, gloving and draping patients
  • Assists with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients
  • Passes instruments to physician during surgery. Continually accounts for number and location of instruments and supplies during surgery in a safe manner
  • Keep accurate count of needles, sponges, instruments and sharps with the circulator, assuming joint responsibility for accurate count
  • Receives and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory
  • Maintains sterile field by keeping it clean and dry and controlling contaminated instruments to avoid the spread of infection
  • Passes specimen to circulator with the permission of surgeon
  • Cleans equipment, instruments and supplies according to manufacturer recommendations
  • Checks to ensure availability of supplies and equipment for the following day's surgery
  • Responsible for assisting with endoscopy procedures as assigned
  • Demonstrates responsibility in taking call as assigned and being readily available for emergency situations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education: 

  • Graduate of a operating room technician program, CST preferred

Certification: 

  • BLS-required upon hire and continuously thereafter
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST), preferred

Skills: 

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
