Job Summary

Directs and coordinates functions and activities of the multiple Pharmacy Departments located in hospitals in a designated area. Serves as the Pharmacist in Charge, as defined by the State Board of Pharmacy, for primary hospital. Supervisors staff at primary work location and off-site Pharmacy Managers. Oversees addition hospital departments as assigned. Ensures compliance with patient care quality standards; directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of all pharmaceuticals and related substances, supplies; directs and participates in the department’s planning, revenue analysis, budgeting, education, and human resource management activities. Consults with and advises Administration, Medical staff and hospital staff on quality, regulatory and risk issues within the department of Pharmacy. Participates in all Joint Commission and regulatory body surveys. Supports and serve as consultant to all medical staff and clinical service personnel on pharmaceutical related issues. Executes work assignments and additional tasks as directed by Support Center functional lead.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and coordinates functions and activities of the Pharmacy Departments.
  • Ensures compliance with patient care quality standards; directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of all pharmaceuticals and related substances, supplies; directs and participates in the department’s planning, revenue analysis, budgeting, education, and human resource management activities.
  • Consults with and advises Administration, Medical staff and hospital staff on quality, regulatory and risk issues within the department of Pharmacy.
  • Participates in all JCAHO and regulatory body surveys. Supports and serve as consultant to all medical staff and clinical service personnel on pharmaceutical related issues.
  • Participates in planning and creating the hospital’s strategic, operational, service design and other organizational plans and policies to achieve the mission and vision of the hospital.
  • Plans and develops departmental budgets, revenue, capital and operational expenses, sufficient number of staff, and any other plans for allocation of fiscal or other resources according to the scope of services provided.
  • Develops, designs and provides for a written scope of services, departmental policies and procedures that guide and support the provision and integration of services according to mission and vision of the hospital.
  • Directs the coordination and integration of departmental services with other departments and the hospital's primary functions.
  • Communicates the hospital’s mission, vision, and plans with staff that guides them in their day-to-day activities. Promotes and motivates staff members to implement department and hospital operational, programmatic and other plans.
  • Recommends and determines the sufficient number of staff to provide services and defines qualifications, performance expectations and competence of each person.
  • Provides for orientation, in-service training, continuing education, annual performance and competency reviews of department personnel to ensure staff is competent to provide services.
  • Participates in hospital and departmental performance improvement activities to measure and assess the quality of services provided.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient profiles via computer order entry.
  • Provides accurate and timely drug information.
  • Follows established policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Performs drug procurement, distribution, preparation, and clinical monitoring procedures.
  • Compounds, packages, labels, and dispenses drugs and intravenous admixture solutions.
  • Reviews and confirms accuracy of work performed by technical and pharmacy intern support personnel.
  • Reviews prescribed drug therapy for appropriateness, effectiveness, and safety based on specific data such as age of patient, disease state, and clinical status.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Working knowledge of OSHA, TJC, CMS, FDA, DEA, and state requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with positive relationships with coworkers and customers.
  • Good general health and stress coping ability.
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean and wears appropriate identification while on duty.
  • Completes annual health, safety, and education competency requirements. Maintains professional growth and development.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served.
  • Reports to work on time as scheduled; adheres to policies regarding notification of absence.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services and staff meetings.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Maintains current licensure/certification for position, if applicable.
  • Full mobility and ability to participate in normal activity.
  • Demonstrates ability to speak and hear to communicate with patients, physicians, hospital personnel and the public.
  • Near vision acuity for accurate reading and ability to inspect and analyze work.
  • Must read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Must have good and regular attendance.
  • Approximate percent of time required to travel: 10%
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • BS or PharmD from accredited School of Pharmacy required.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.

Licenses/Certification

  • Current Pharmacist licensure in state where hospital is located.
  • BLS within 90 days of hire.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of hospital pharmacy management experience required.
