Job Summary

  • The Pharmacy Director is responsible for leading the strategic, operational, and clinical functions of the pharmacy department, ensuring optimal medication management and regulatory compliance
  • This role oversees clinical pharmacy services, financial management, staff development, and quality assurance initiatives, aligning departmental goals with the hospital’s mission
  • The Pharmacy Director collaborates with senior leadership, medical staff, and other departments to enhance patient care, implement evidence-based practices, and ensure the safe and effective use of medications across the healthcare system

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective medication management
  • Provide strategic leadership in planning, organizing, and directing pharmacy services to align with the hospital’s mission and goals
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including TJC, CMS, DEA, and FDA guidelines
  • Oversee clinical pharmacy programs, including antimicrobial stewardship, medication reconciliation, and clinical consults
  • Develop and manage the pharmacy budget, monitor financial performance, and implement cost-saving initiatives
  • Manage pharmacy staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives related to medication safety, formulary management, and clinical outcomes
  • Collaborate with medical staff to implement clinical protocols and evidence-based practices
  • Ensure accurate preparation and dispensing of medications, including compounding and sterile preparations
  • Represent the pharmacy department in executive meetings and interdisciplinary committees
  • Coordinate the implementation of pharmacy information systems and automation to enhance workflow efficiency

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacotherapy, medication safety, and regulatory standards
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets and analyze financial data
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and resolve complex clinical, operational, and personnel issues
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and pharmacy information systems
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuous learning and professional development

Qualifications

Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited School of Pharmacy required
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Administration (MHA), or a related field preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Active and unrestricted Pharmacist license in the state of practice required
  • Certification as a Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) as required by state regulations required
  • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) or Pharmacy Administration preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Experience

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of clinical pharmacy experience, with at least 5 years in a management or leadership role required
  • Experience in financial management, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement initiatives preferred
