Job Summary

  • The Operating Room Orderly supports the surgical team by assisting with the preparation, maintenance, and turnover of the operating room environment. Responsibilities include transporting patients, preparing equipment, supporting anesthesia care, assisting with positioning, and ensuring that rooms and common areas remain clean, stocked, and organized. The orderly helps promote a safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical environment.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with maintaining cleanliness and readiness of patient rooms and OR suites
  • Support turnover between surgical procedures by preparing the environment and equipment
  • Transport patients and specimens, and retrieve necessary materials such as x-rays or charts
  • Assemble and transport surgical equipment and supplies as needed
  • Assist anesthesia care providers with room setup and patient support as directed
  • Participate in infection control and sanitation activities
  • Demonstrate professionalism and teamwork in all interactions

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Ability to take direction and work as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, sound judgment, and attention to detail
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and self-motivated demeanor
  • Able to respond calmly and appropriately in high-stress environments
  • Constant bending, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, and reaching
  • Frequent lifting and moving of patients and equipment (26-75 lbs), with rare lifting over 75 lbs
  • Frequent repetitive hand/arm and foot/leg movements
  • Occasional sitting and squatting
  • Constant visual acuity, hearing, and clear speech required
  • Rare exposure to odors and taste discrimination
  • Operating room and adjacent clinical support areas
  • Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, biohazardous waste, and communicable diseases
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, medications, gases, and latex
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required 

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Licenses/Certifications

  • None required

Experience

  • Experience in a healthcare or surgical setting preferred
