Job Summary

  • The Nurse Apprentice serves as a multi-functional member of the patient care team, providing clinical and administrative support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
  • Responsibilities include assisting with basic patient care, unit secretary duties, 12-lead EKGs, and functioning as a monitor technician
  • This role is designed for nursing students who have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing and are seeking hands-on experience in a hospital setting

Essential Functions

  • Performs basic patient care activities under RN supervision, including vital sign monitoring, glucose checks, and intake/output documentation
  • Assists with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, ambulation, feeding, and toileting
  • Reports changes in patient condition to nursing staff promptly
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and common areas
  • Performs EKGs and assists in monitoring patient cardiac rhythms
  • Provides support in clerical functions such as answering phones and maintaining records
  • Uses appropriate medical terminology and maintains confidentiality in all communications
  • Ensures accurate, timely documentation and effective communication with care team members

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and patient care procedures 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work under supervision in high-stress environments 
  • Basic computer skills preferred 
  • Ability to safely move or lift patients and equipment as needed 
  • Constant bending, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and frequent lifting/moving of patients and equipment 
  • Occasional climbing and running 
  • Requires full range of vision, hearing, and dexterity for patient care and monitoring 
  • Hospital clinical unit 
  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, cleaning agents, and latex 
  • May encounter patients with varying levels of acuity and behavior 

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required) 
  • Current enrollment and good standing in an accredited School of Nursing with successful completion of Fundamentals of Nursing (Required) 

Licenses/Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required) 

Experience

  • None required; clinical rotations in nursing school preferred
