Job Summary

The Director of Laboratory will ensure that all services are meeting the quality metrics, are cost contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Additional responsibilities include recognizing results or issues that require referral to the Pathologist, assuring competency of all personnel, formulating the budget for the department, maintaining performance improvement activities within the department and participating in Quality activities and maintaining efficient and effective departmental operations in compliance with all state, federal and local regulatory laws, standards and protocols. The person in this position must be capable of performing all the duties of a Medical Technologist. Responsible for personnel management reporting to the Administrator in this area.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for department’s operational excellence and ensures that the department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards
  • Responsible for the fiscal management of the department; ensures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources.
  • Works with hospital administration on planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations
  • Makes daily rounds in the Laboratory to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional environment
  • Secures and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care
  • Initiates and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation
  • Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department and prepare budgets for personnel, operating expense and capital equipment
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administration
  • Establishes and maintains standards of performance and ensures competency and appropriate licensure of personnel
  • Directs and participates in the human resources management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes
  • Coordinates the department's in-service training
  • Attends and participates in hospital committees, as appropriate
  • Makes recommendations to the pathologist regarding new test procedures, equipment purchases and budgetary functions

Qualifications

Education

  • BS or Masters of Science degree with appropriate courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics which would qualify him/her as a Medical Technologist, or Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist B.S.(ASCP), or Medical Technologist (AMT/ASCP) with B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and has passed Board of Registry examination

Licenses/Certifications

  • Medical Technologist certification (ASCP or equivalent), or Medical Technologist recognized by the GDHR.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the clinical Laboratory, and management and supervisory skills necessary to perform the job functions relating to personnel management.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
