Job Summary:
The RN Charge-Surgery Outpatient organizes and facilitates activities of their assigned shift, to deliver quality care in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. The charge nurse assists in managing staff members, providing nursing leadership and fulfills all the duties of the Registered Nurse job description.
Essential Functions:

• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Interacts professionally with patients/families; treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
• Effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers, demonstrating customer service excellence through application of positive language principles, appropriate response and use of constructive problem-solving techniques which foster positive outcomes
• Supervises and mentors nursing and support staff.
• Assists director with the coordination and direction of patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and hospital policy is followed
• Provides input in formulating patient care policies and procedures; Serves as a clinical resource person to staff and other departments
• Assists director in the completion of regular performance evaluations for each staff member
• Determines staffing level and assignments based on staff availability, staff abilities, census, patient acuity and work/patient flow.
• Assists in evaluating and setting standards for the department and equipment; assists with monitoring utilization of equipment and supplies
• Provides direction for teaching patients and their families and other educational activities
• Provides direct patient care as staffing needs require.
• Assists with: obtaining monthly data needed for required department stats; reviewing and correcting the department’s daily Revenue Usage
• Assists in resolving personnel and patient concerns at the department level, utilizing the grievance process as required
• Maintains accurate and continued documentation. Documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
• Assists in orientation and training of new staff/students as necessary.
• Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
• Keeps current with principles and practices, regulations, and standards that apply to healthcare.
• Performs other reasonably related job duties as assigned or requested, within scope of practice.

Education:
Associate Degree in Nursing, Required
Bachelor Degree, Preferred
Required Licenses:
Must have a current Mississippi Registered Nurse license or a current Compact State Registered Nurse license.
Required Certifications:
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification, required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
