Job Summary

The Manager – Medical/Surgical is responsible for the day-to-day clinical and operational management of a Medical/Surgical nursing unit. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care through effective staff leadership, clinical oversight, regulatory compliance, and continuous performance improvement. The Nurse Manager partners with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and hospital leadership to support safe staffing, positive patient outcomes, and a culture of accountability and professional development.

Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership and oversight of daily nursing operations for the Medical/Surgical unit.
  • Ensures safe, effective, and evidence-based patient care in accordance with professional nursing standards, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manages staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to meet patient care needs and productivity targets.
  • Recruits, orients, coaches, evaluates, and develops nursing staff; addresses performance issues in accordance with policy.
  • Monitors quality indicators (e.g., patient safety events, patient satisfaction, core measures) and implements improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Collaborates with physicians, case management, ancillary departments, and leadership to optimize patient flow and care coordination.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, hospital committees, and performance improvement activities.
  • Assists with budget management, including staffing controls, supply utilization, and expense monitoring.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong clinical knowledge of acute care Medical/Surgical nursing practice
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and team-building skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement principles
  • Effective communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to analyze data and apply findings to improve patient care and unit performance
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and standard office software
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching in a clinical environment
  • Ability to assist with patient handling and movement as needed
  • Occasional lifting of supplies or equipment (up to 50 lbs)
  • Visual and auditory acuity required for patient care and communication
  • Acute care hospital Medical/Surgical unit
  • Regular exposure to patient care environments, including bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases
  • Requires adherence to safety protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (Preferred)
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice (Required)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Required)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (Required or within timeframe specified by facility policy)

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of recent clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting (Required)
  • Prior charge nurse, supervisory, or nursing leadership experience (Preferred)
  • Medical/Surgical nursing experience (Strongly Preferred)
