JOB SUMMARY

  • To provide medical care and treatment to gynecological and obstetrical patients under the supervision of an obstetrician/gynecologist during pregnancy and normal delivery and to instruct patients in proper prenatal and postnatal practices and infant care. Also, to care for female gynecological needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Takes part in initial examination of patient, monitors course of pregnancy, advising on proper health practices, taking tests as appropriate, and reporting any complications to obstetrician/ gynecologists
  • Prepares patients and fathers for delivery; trains mothers-to-be in exercise, breathing, and relaxation techniques
  • Provides instruction in breast-feeding, if desired
  • Attends and reassures patient through course of labor, monitors condition of fetus, administers medications, notifies physician of prolonged labor or any complications indicating need for possible surgical intervention
  • Delivers infant and checks both mother and child to ensure that they are responding normally
  • During postpartum period, visits mother and child to give further instruction in feeding and care of the newborn
  • Conducts classes for patients and family members concerning pregnancy, delivery, and proper child care
  • Conducts classes for nursing students so that they may assist new mothers as part of their training
  • Provides advice on family planning and performs gynecological services

  • Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization
  • Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies

FOUNDATIONAL FIVE

  • Ability to describe and conduct a “Huddle” and explain when it is conducted and what is discussed
  • Ability to describe and conduct a “Brief” and explain when it is conducted and what is discussed
  • Ability to describe and conduct a “De-Brief” and explain when it is conducted and what is discussed
  • Ability to describe the “Learning Board” and give an example of what has been put on the learning board in past
  • Ability to communicate what Executive Patient Safety Rounds (EPSR) are and participate when ESPR’s are conducted

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Registered nurse and successful completion of a post-graduate medical school program for nurse-midwives

Required Licenses

  • [Alabama, United States] Midwife, Certified Nurse
  • Current Certified Nurse-Midwife license to practice in the state of Alabama

Required Skills

  • Good verbal and written skills necessary for communication with patients and physicians
  • Ability to remain calm during labor and delivery in order to reassure patient and exercise good professional judgment.
