Job Summary

The Director of Education is responsible for assessing, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating education and training programs to meet the learning needs of hospital staff across clinical and non-clinical departments. This leader coordinates general orientation, continuing education, competency validation, and compliance training to ensure delivery of high-quality, safe patient care aligned with regulatory standards. The Director collaborates with hospital leadership to promote professional development and staff engagement through effective education strategies.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements orientation and onboarding programs for new staff, including RNs, LVNs, and ancillary roles
  • Identifies learning needs based on Quality Council recommendations, annual assessments, and departmental input
  • Coordinates continuing education, annual competencies, in-service training, and compliance education
  • Ensures training meets federal, state, and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS)
  • Collaborates with department managers to support clinical practice improvements and evidence-based education
  • Develops and manages the education budget and resources
  • Maintains and updates learning materials, clinical protocols, and learning management systems (LMS)
  • Promotes staff engagement and participation in professional development
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, safety committees, and performance improvement activities
  • Serves as liaison with external education providers and represents the hospital at education-related forums
  • Monitors, tracks, and reports on staff training, compliance status, and educational outcomes
  • Upholds ethical standards and maintains confidentiality of staff and organizational information

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong presentation, public speaking, and facilitation skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of adult learning principles, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of learning management systems
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrates professionalism, critical thinking, integrity, and collaborative leadership

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Education, or clinical specialty preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or healthcare-related field required

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current RN license in the state of practice required
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist certification preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience in an acute care setting (e.g., Medical/Surgical, ICU/CCU)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of leadership, education, or preceptorship experience
  • Experience in staff development, competency programs, and regulatory compliance preferred
