Job Summary

  • The Medical Scribe supports the physician by performing clerical and information technology functions in a clinical setting. This position charts patient encounters in real-time, transcribes physician dictation, manages documents within the electronic health record (EHR), and assists with clinic flow. The Medical Scribe is a critical part of the healthcare team, ensuring accurate and timely documentation while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Essential Functions

  • Follow the physician during patient visits and chart encounters in real-time using the EHR
  • Transcribe physician dictation, including notes, letters, history and physicals, discharge summaries, and other correspondence
  • Generate referral letters and manage medical documentation
  • Clarify unclear or incomplete dictation as needed
  • Assist with data management tasks during the physician’s clinical activities
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all documentation entered into the medical record

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Proficiency in typing and transcription with high attention to detail
  • Minimum typing speed of 60-70 words per minute
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and anticipate physician needs
  • Discreet, tactful, and professional in all interactions
  • Must demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and self-motivation
  • Frequent sitting and computer use required
  • Visual acuity necessary for reviewing and entering detailed data
  • Occasional walking and interaction with patients and clinical team
  • Outpatient clinical environment, primarily within the Cancer Center
  • May require occasional travel to satellite locations
  • Interacts with physicians, patients, and interdisciplinary team members

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course required
  • Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • None required

Experience

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting required
  • Experience with EHR systems and practice management software required
  • Two years of experience as a Medical Assistant preferred
  • Knowledge of hematology/oncology terminology preferred
