The Health Information Management Supervisor manages and controls the daily operations of the Health Information Management Department.Duties include training and supervising designated employees in the department, maintaining effective information systems, monitors dictated and transcribed reports, retrieves, preps and prepares records for scanning, assist in scanning and analyzing medical records, assisting with maintaining Joint Commission and other regulatory compliance.Represents HIM Department in management and committee meetings/activities in absence of HIM Director.

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Assist in assuring that the HIM department functions in a manner consistent with the HIM profession and the goals and objectives of the facility.
  • Monitors, corrects transcription errors and distributes corrected reports to Meditech.Sends transcribed reports to primary care and consulting physicians as instructed by the dictation physician.
  • Preps records for scanning.
  • Assists director in ensuring that the turnaround time for scanning, analyzing, and transcription is kept current, while providing quality controls to maintain accuracy.
  • Assist in performing quality improvement activities for the HIM department making recommendations and initiating changes as appropriate.
  • Utilizes problem solving techniques to address opportunities as they arise, assisting other departments/areas in accomplishing common goals/objectives.
  • Assist with administration of release of information policies, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information released.
  • Assists in maintaining compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and/or other regulatory or accrediting standards.
  • Ensures that all health records are completed within the designated time frame and records are readily retrievable when requested.
  • Ensures that regulatory/accrediting standards are met in department operations.
  • Assists in maintaining hospital-wide compliance by ongoing monitoring of compliance in the following areas:documentation, record completion, release of information, staff awareness of standards, etc.
  • Participates in hospital performance improvement and risk management programs.
  • Assists in developing departmental performance improvement, monitors, data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Responds to patient, family, physician and/or other complaints in a timely manner and consults with director and/or risk management when appropriate.
  • Adheres to safety plans (i.e., body mechanics, universal precautions, fall preventions, etc.) with no error trending.
  • Keeps an organized work area and desk clean.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:High School Diploma or equivalent, required.Post secondary degree preferred. Current RHIA or RHIT certification preferred.

Experience: 3 -5 years progressively HIM experience preferred.Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
