Job Summary

The ICU Charge Nurse provides leadership, clinical expertise, and administrative support during assigned shifts in the Intensive Care Unit. This role includes overseeing patient care delivery, coordinating unit activities, supporting staff, and acting as a liaison with physicians and other departments. The Charge Nurse ensures compliance with clinical standards, promotes patient and staff safety, and facilitates an environment of continuous improvement and excellence in care.

Essential Functions

Oversees daily operations of ICU shift, including patient assignments and staffing adjustments.

Provides direct patient care as needed, including assessments, care planning, and implementation.

Monitors staff compliance with policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

Facilitates communication among physicians, staff, patients, and families.

Supports staff by assisting with complex clinical tasks and responding to emergent situations.

Participates in the orientation, training, and evaluation of nursing personnel.

Conducts unit rounds to assess patient condition and satisfaction.

Ensures equipment, supplies, and medications are adequately available and functional.

Collaborates with supervisors on resource utilization, budgeting, and performance improvement.

Completes administrative tasks such as documentation, shift handoffs, and incident reporting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and delegate effectively.

Excellent clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.

Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities.

Knowledge of ICU best practices, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.

Skilled in prioritization and time management in high-acuity environments.

Must maintain professional demeanor and patient-centered focus.

Capable of lifting 50 lbs, with frequent standing, walking, kneeling, and reaching.

Proficient in use of personal protective equipment and adherence to infection control standards.


Qualifications

Education

Postsecondary (Cert/Diploma/Program Grad) from an accredited school of nursing (Required) And

Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related field (Preferred)

Experience

2+ years experience as a Registered Nurse with demonstrated leadership skills (Preferred) And

1+ years supervisory/charge nurse experience (Preferred)
